Each summer sea turtles also enjoy the beaches of Englewood when females begin arriving to nest late at night beginning in the month of May and continuing into September. It takes about 1-3 hours for the nesting female to lay her eggs before returning to the water. Hatchlings start emerging from the nest between 47 -75 days later and start their dash to the sea. Nesting sea turtles are timid and vulnerable and may be easily frightened away if they are disturbed.
Every day volunteers search the beach area during the season to locate fresh nests and mark the area with tape to protect the nest. Sea turtles are protected by law. Please leave the turtles, nests , eggs and hatchling alone.
